Men's Tennis to Host USD, Stanford, Cal This Week

The third-ranked UCLA men's tennis team has three home matches on its plate this week starting with San Diego on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. The Bruins will then host Pac-12 Conference rivals Stanford and Cal on Friday and Saturday, respectively. The UCLA-Stanford showdown begins at 1:30 p.m. The Bruins and Bears will square off on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Both matches are considered non-conference and will not count toward the Pac-12 standings. Following this week's matches, the Bruins will not be in action again until traveling to the USTA/ITA National Team Indoors, Feb. 15-18 in Seattle, Wash. UCLA qualified for the event following a pair of wins over both Cal Poly (4-0) and BYU (6-1) during ITA Kick-Off Weekend at the Los Angeles Tennis Center, Jan. 26-28. A total of 16 teams will head to Seattle for the event, which is considered the second-biggest compeition of the year next to the season-ending NCAA Championships. UCLA is currently ranked No. 3 in the nation behind No. 1 Virginia and No. 2 USC. The Bruins currently have two players ranked in singles led by No. 12 Marcos Giron. Dennis Mkrtchian is also ranked, checking in at No. 41. UCLA does not have any doubles teams currently ranked. New team rankings are due out on Tuesday. UCLA improved to 4-0 on Feb. 2, downing Fresno State, 7-0. After winning the doubles point, the Bruins won all six singles matches in straight sets, including a 6-4, 7-6 win by redshirt freshman Ryoto Tachi, who was playing in his first-ever dual match for UCLA.
