No. 5 Men's Tennis Heads to Arizona, Utah
April 4, 2012
LOS ANGELES - The fifth-ranked UCLA men's tennis team (16-2; 2-0 Pac-12) hits the road again this week, as the Bruins continue Pac-12 play in Arizona and Utah. The Bruins will be in action at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center in Tucson on Friday, taking on the Wildcats (5-12; 0-2 Pac-12) at 1:00 p.m. UCLA then has a day off before facing Utah (11-7; 0-2 Pac-12) on Easter Sunday at the Eccles Tennis Center beginning at 11:00 a.m. (MST). There will be no live stats for this weekend's action, however fans are encouraged to follow the UCLA men's tennis twitter page: @uclatennis.
This weekend marks the last time that UCLA will likely leave the state of California prior to the NCAA Championships in Athens this May, as the Bruins only remaining road match is across town at USC on April 20. UCLA could get sent out of town for NCAA Regionals, however that appears unlikely. The Bruins have hosted NCAA Regionals every year since it began in 1998.
UCLA is coming off a successful road trip to the Pacific Northwest last week, dispatching of both Oregon and Washington. Although the Bruins beat the Ducks, 7-0 on Friday, UCLA, as expected, had a little tougher time with the No. 22 Huskies on Saturday in Seattle. After sweeping doubles play, UCLA moved out to a 4-0 lead before dropping matches at court Nos. 1 and 3. Fortunately for the Bruins, the match was clinched by the time the Huskies could get on the board.
Newcomers Dennis Novikov and Karue Sell have both begun classes and are working out with the team. Novikov made his collegiate debut against LMU on March 27, winning both his singles and doubles matches. Sell has yet to play in a dual match. The two players, who are freshmen, were ranked in the top 35 of the ITF World Junior Rankings prior to arriving at UCLA.
UCLA hosts what is annually one of its biggest weekends of the season on April 13 and 14, as No. 8 Stanford and No. 12 Cal visit the Los Angeles Tennis Center. It marks the final two homes matches of the season. It will also be Senior Day for Bruin players Nick Meister, Evan Lee and Jeff Gast.
