NCAA Men's Tennis Regionals
The 12th-seeded UCLA men's tennis team (16-6) kicks off NCAA Regional play at the Los Angeles Tennis Center this Friday, taking on Binghamton (12-13) beginning at 1:00 p.m. The other NCAA Regional match that day features UC Irvine (19-7) facing Mississippi (12-9) at 10:00 a.m. Friday's winners will meet in the second round on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. with the winner of that match advancing to the round of 16 the following week in Stanford, Calif.
Of the three teams visiting UCLA this weekend, the Bruins have only faced UC Irvine this season. The two teams squared off on Feb. 3 at the Los Angeles Tennis Center, with UCLA pulling out a 4-3 victory courtesy of Maxime Tabatruong's three-set victory over Sam Gould at No. 3 singles.
The Bruins are led by freshman Daniel Kosakowski, who has appeared at the No. 1 singles position in all 22 matches this season. He is currently ranked No. 37 nationally in singles, boasting a 20-12 overall record. Other UCLA players listed in the May 2 ITA Singles Rankings include: Amit Inbar (#58), Clay Thompson (#79) and Adrien Puget (#103). In addition, Alex Brigham and Puget are ranked No. 32 in doubles, followed by Warren Hardie and Inbar at No. 57.
UCLA, which is making its 35th straight NCAA Tournament appearance, is the only team to compete in every NCAA Tournament since the team format was adopted in 1977. Head coach Billy Martin, who led UCLA to the program's 16th NCAA title in 2005, will pick up his 400th career coaching victory with a win over Binghamton on Friday. His current coaching record stands at 399-85.
