Three Bruins Advance in Farmers Classic Qualifying
July 21, 2012
LOS ANGELES - UCLA's Clay Thompson, Nick Meister and Kevin Kim were all victorious on Saturday afternoon, as qualifying for the 2012 Farmers Classic kicked off at UCLA's Sycamore Tennis Courts. Meister, who recently capped off a stellar Bruin career by earning All-America honors in 2012, moved into Sunday's second round following a 7-5, 6-0 win over Serbia's Ilija Bozoljac. He will next face eight-seeded Rik De Voest of South Africa on Sunday (second match on court No. 4). Although UCLA's Thompson and Marcos Giron both received qualifying wild cards into this year's event, the two players unfortunately were forced to face each other in Saturday's opening round, with Thompson narrowly defeating Giron, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Next up for the Bruin junior is a meeting with fifth-seeded Ricardas Berankis of Lithuania on Sunday (second match on court No. 1). Although he was ousted from singles, Giron will still get a chance to play on his home courts next week, as he and Meister were awarded a wild card into the main doubles draw. Kim, who played one season at UCLA in 1997 before turning professional, breezed into Sunday's second round with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Egor Puntus of Belarus. He will face Uruguay's Marcel Felder on Sunday (second match on court No. 5). Sunday's play begins at Noon. Click HERE for the order of play.
