Irvine, Calif. - UCLA's Marcos Giron and Dennis Mkrtchian each posted singles wins on Saturday to advance to the round of 16 at the USTA/ITA Southwest Regionals, which is being played this year on the campus of UC Irvine.
Giron was a 6-3, 6-2 winner over UCSB's Sasha Gryaznov in Saturday's third round, setting up a Sunday showdown with another Gaucho player, Benjamin Recknagel, at 11:00 a.m. Joining Giron in the round of 16 is Mkrtchian, who beat Cal Poly's Jordan Kepler, 6-2, 7-5. Next up is a meeting with LMU's Nicholas Bjerke on Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
UCLA has two doubles teams that will compete in Sunday's quarterfinals, as Warren Hardie and Mkrtchian will take on top-seeded Max De Vroome and Roberto Quiroz of USC, while second-seeded Giron and Dennis Novikov will face USD's Ciaran Fitzgerald and Romain Kalaydjian.
