Irvine, Calif. - Just hours after Bruin women's tennis player Robin Anderson took home the singles title at the USTA/ITA Southwest Regionals in San Diego, UCLA sophomore men's tennis player Marcos Giron followed suit, downing teammate Dennis Mkrtchian in straight sets of the ITA Regional men's event at UC Irvine.

Before the final, Giron and Mkrtchian each needed to win semifinal matches earlier in the day. Giron was a 6-4, 6-4 winner over USC's Eric Johnson, while Mkrtchian upset USC's third-seeded Roberto Quiroz, 5-7, 6-3, 6-1. Following a short break, the two Bruin sophomores then met in the championship match, with Giron taking a 6-2, 6-2 victory. Giron, who didn't lose a set in six matches at the Regionals, was the tournament's No. 5 seed. Mkrtchian was seeded 11th.

With the win, Giron earns a place in the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, which takes place Nov. 8-11 in Flushing, N.Y.
