Senior Martell Munguia and sophomore John Caulfield led the UCLA men's track and field team on Saturday at the CSUN Invitational in Northridge, CA as both captured individual wins in their respective events.

Caulfield improved on his regional qualifying mark in the discus, throwing a new lifetime-best 185-9 to win that event, while Munguia won the 1500m in a time of 3:51.35.

Also in the discus, junior Jason Rider finished second to Caulfield with a throw of 175-5, just five inches shy of his season-best of 175-10. Senior Jeremy Silverman, competing in his first meet since suffering a high ankle sprain in February, finished fifth in the discus with a toss of 164-4. In the shot put, freshman Vache Sevajian threw 51-5.75, while freshman Boldizsar Kocsor finished fourth in the hammer with a throw of 189-6.

In the jump events, sophomore Joel Tuosto finished second in the long jump with a mark of 23-6, while junior Chris Merriweather was third in the triple with a leap of 47-0.25. Sophomore Chris Bencomo and junior David Shortenhaus tied for fifth in the pole vault with identical jumps of 15-1.

On the track, freshman Alex Pearlstone ran a season-best 11.17 in the 100m, while junior Derrick Cook ran 23.53 in the 200m. Sophomore David Shipp ran a season-best 49.83 in the 400m. In the 400m hurdles, junior Michael Elbogen ran 56.46, junior Tracy Session ran 57.28, freshman Torsten Niegmann clocked 57.96, and sophomore Jason Eiker-Wiles ran 59.23.

In the distance events, six Bruins competed in the 1500m - Munguia, 3:51.35 (1st); junior Micky Cobrin, 3:43.67 (2nd); sophomore Mike Haddan, 3:53.78 (3rd); sophomore Matt Stollenwerk, 3:55.56 (6th); sophomore Drew Shackleton, 4:00.20 (9th); and senior Nick DeFelice, 4:00.33 (10th).

In the 800m, freshman Laef Barnes finished fifth in a time of 1:53.28, while fellow freshman Ryan Gordon ran 2:01.88.
