LOS ANGELES - Through pouring rain, cold temperatures and wind on Saturday at Drake Stadium, UCLA's men's and women's track and field teams remained unbeaten in dual meets, defeating Houston, Minnesota (women) and CS Northridge.
In the men's triangular, UCLA, ranked No. 8 in the U. S., won with 72 points, followed by Houston (33) and CS Northridge (32). In dual scoring, the Bruins beat Houston (81-26) and CS Northridge (75-33) and Houston beat CS Northridge (52-49). The Bruins are now 8-0 this year in duals, have won 49 consecutive dual meets and under head coach Bob Larsen, in his 14th season, UCLA has a dual meet record of 110-2-1.
In the women's quadrangular, the Bruins, ranked No. 2 in the U. S., won with 87 points, followed by Houston (38), CS Northridge (28 1/2) and Minnesota (23 1/2). In dual scoring, UCLA beat Minnesota (110-25), CS Northridge (103-33) and Houston (93-44), Houston beat Minnesota (79-55) and CS Northridge (71-64) and CS Northridge beat Minnesota (82-38). The Bruin women are now 9-0 this year in duals, have won 52 consecutive dual meets and under head coach Jeanette Bolden, now in her fifth season, UCLA has a dual meet record of 44-0.
Considering the conditions, some of the top winning field event marks included--UCLA junior Luke Sullivan in the mens hammer (196-2), senior Rachelle Noble in the womens hammer (186-6), UCLA senior Suzy Powell in the womens javelin (173-11), UCLA senior Nada Kawar in the shot put (56-1 1/4) and UCLA junior Wade Tift in the shot put (60-6 1/2). Because of the rain, the mens and womens pole vault and discus, along with the mens high jump and triple jump, were cancelled.
Considering the conditions, some of the top winning track event marks included--UCLA junior Joanna Hayes in the 100m hurdles (13.37), UCLA junior Andrea Anderson in the 100m (11.60) and CS Northridge senior Joe Criner in the 100m (10.73).
UCLA has one more home meet left on its 1998 schedule, hosting archrival USC and Brigham Young at Drake Stadium on Saturday, May 2. Because of the rain, the official mens and womens 4 X 400m relays were not run.
