Murphy Finishes Seventh in Pac-10 Decathlon Competition

In the final day of the 2005 Pac-10 Multi-Events (heptathlon/decathlon) held at UCLA's Drake Stadium junior David Murphy's 5,606 points placed seventh, good for two team points for the Bruin men. On the final day, the men competed in the 110m hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500m. Murphy won his specialty, the pole vault, with a mark of 16-6.75 (926 points). In the other four events - he placed sixth (lifetime best 16.82, 643 points) in the 110m hurdles; seventh (95-0, 444 points) in the discus; eighth in the javelin (99-7, 304 points) and eighth (6:30.26, 154 points) in the 1500m. The 2005 Pac-10 decathlon champion was Washington State junior Darion Powell, with a 10-event total of 7,531 points, a lifetime best and NCAA automatic qualifier. Powell, who entered the final day in first-place, won two events on Sunday, the 110m hurdles (14.90, 862 points) and discus (153-8, 805 points), and also tied for fourth in the pole vault (14-3.25, 716 points); placed second in the javelin (193-9, 724 points) and was sixth (5:04.39, 535 points) in the 1500m. Second-place went to Oregon junior Andy Young (7,165) and California junior Jonas Hallgrimsson finished third (7,002 points, lifetime best, NCAA provisional qualifier).
