Bruin Results from Day One of NCAA West Regionals

At the conclusion of the first day of the NCAA West Regional Championships, two Bruins were Regional Champions and three Bruins have qualified for the NCAA Championships in Sacramento (June 11-14). Juniors Dan Ames and Juaune Armon won the discus and long jump, respectively. Ames, Armon and senior Scott Wiegand (discus) have advanced to the NCAA Championships.
The top five finishers in each event at the Regional Championships will automatically advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Sacramento, CA. An additional six to eight student-athletes in each event will receive at -large bids based upon a seasonal best list. The at-large qualifiers will be announced Monday, June 2.
Hammer - Freshman Jake Knight placed 15th overall, sixth in his heat, with a throw of 181-5 (55.29m). Knight does not advance to the NCAA Championships.
Long Jump - Junior Juaune Armon jumped a season best 26-2.75 (7.99m, w: 0.0) to win the long jump and automatically advance to the NCAA Championships. The jump is a quarter inch shy of Armon's personal best, 26-3. He also scored 10 points for the Bruins in the team competition.
Discus - Junior Dan Ames and senior Scott Wiegand went one-three in the discus and advance to the NCAA Championships. Ames, the NCAA West Region discus champion, won with a throw of 195-4 (59.53m), scoring 10 points. Wiegand threw 187-2 (57.06m), scoring six points.
5000m - No entries.
4x100m Relay - The Bruin relay squad of John McCauley, Marques Burrus, Chauncee Smith and Jonathan Williams was disqualified due to a mishandled baton pass between the third and anchor legs. The squad does not advance to tomorrow's final.
1500m - Sophomore Jon Rankin won heat two in 3:49.41, the third fastest time of the day. Rankin automatically qualified for tomorrow's final. Sophomore Ben Aragon placed seventh in heat three (20th overall) in 3:52.86. Aragon does not advance to the final.
110m Hurdles - Sophomore Tony Golston placed fourth in heat one and qualified for tomorrow's final in a personal best 14.00 (w: +1.6), the fifth fastest time of the day. Sophomore Jonathan Williams placed third in heat two, ninth overall, in 14.17 (w: -2.1). Williams does not advance to tomorrow's final.
400m - Freshman Craig Everhart won heat two and automatically qualified for the final in 47.24. Everhart's time was the third fastest of the day. Sophomore Denye' Versher placed fourth in heat one, 13th overall, in 47.99. Versher does not advance to the final.
100m - No entries.
400m Hurdles - Seniors Kyle Erickson and John Barbieri each won their heats and automatically qualified for tomorrow's final. Erickson ran 51.01, the top time of the day, and Barbieri ran 51.16, the second fastest time of the day. Williams placed second in heat one in 51.86, also advancing to the finals. Golston placed third in heat three in 52.31. And, freshman Matt Willis placed fourth in heat three in a personal best 52.57. Neither Golston nor Willis advance to tomorrow's final.
