Greg Garza Named UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week

Senior became only the third man ever to win three Pac-10 discus titles.

May 19, 2008

Senior Greg Garza (Indio, CA/Indio HS) of the UCLA men's track and field team was selected as the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week (May 12-18).

Garza made his final Pac-10 Championship one to remember, as he won his third consecutive discus crown in dramatic fashion on the final throw of the competition. Garza led all competitors until the penultimate thrower, Martin Maric from California, moved ahead on his final throw with a mark of 191-2. Garza answered that with a winning throw of 198-10 to become only the third man in Pac-10 history to win three discus titles. He joins a pair of Olympic medalists in UCLA's John Godina (1993-95) and Stanford's Dave Weill (1961-63) in accomplishing that feat.

This is Garza's first UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor of the season and of his career.

Also nominated: Kevin Chappell, M. Golf; Erik Flores, M. Golf; Ingrid Kantola, W. Track & Field; Megan Langenfeld, Softball; Tim Murphy, Baseball.
