Strutzel Advances To Semi-finals At World University Games

UCLA alum Jess Strutzel won his men's 800m preliminary heat on Thursday at the World University Games in Beijing, China and will advance to Friday's semi-finals.
Strutzel, from Huntington Beach, won his 800m heat in a time of 1:49.82. His USA teammate, Derrick Peterson, also advanced, placing second in his heat with a mark of 1:49.44. Peterson won a bronze medal in this event at the 1999 WUGs.
During his Bruin career (1997-2000), Strutzel won two NCAA titles. In 2000, he won the NCAA Indoor 800m crown and at the 1999 NCAA Indoor, Strutzel ran the first leg on UCLA's winning distance medley relay that set an American record (9:33.17). Strutzel holds the school outdoor (1:45.81) and indoor (1:46.48) 800m records. At this summer's U. S. Championships, June 21-24 at Eugene, OR, he placed third in the 800m (1:47.53).
At the WUGs on Wednesday, UCLA senior Tracy O'Hara no-heighted in the women's pole vault. At the U. S. meet, she placed fourth (14-1 1/4) and was a member of the U. S. team that competed at the World Championships, Aug. 3-12 at Edmonton, Canada.
In other UCLA track and field news, Bruin alums John Godina and Seilala Sua will be among hundreds of track and field athletes who will compete at the upcoming Goodwill Games in Brisbane, Australia, Sept. 4-7. Both Godina and Sua have had successful 2001 outdoor campaigns. Godina won the shot put at the World (71-9) and U. S. (70-10 1/2) Championships. Sua placed sixth in the discus at the Worlds (209-1) and won both the shot put (58-11 1/2) and discus (207-10) at the U. S. Championships. It was her fourth consecutive U. S. discus crown and first shot put title.
