Alumni Team Defeats Bruins In Annual Match

Men's volleyball faces Manitoba at home on Wednesday.

LOS ANGELES -- The Alumni team defeated the Bruins, 3-1, tonight at Pauley Pavilion in front of a crowd of 395.

The Alumni got off to a quick start and won the first two games, 17-16 and 15-9. However, UCLA stormed back, winning the third game, 15-5, with a match-high hitting percentage of .385. The Alumni then took the fourth and last game,15-12.

UCLA had a .270 hitting percentage, led by senior outside hitter Evan Thatcher who had a team-high 18 kills. He was followed by sophomore opposite hitter Matt Komer and freshman quick hitter Scott Morrow, who both had 9 kills.

For the Alumni team, three time All-American opposite hitter Paul Nihipali ('94 -'97) dominated the court with a match-high 29 kills. Among other participants were former three-time All-American setter Mike Sealy ('90 -'93), Tom Stillwell ('95 - '98), member of three NCAA title teams, All-American Ben Moselle ('96 - 98), Jason Harper ('92 - '96), Trong Nguyen ('94 - 97), and Fred Robins ('96 - '99).

UCLA will face the University of Manitoba, Wednesday, January 19 in Pauley Pavilion at 7 p.m. Their first league match is away at Pacific on Friday, January 21 followed by a match at Stanford on Saturday, January 22.
