LOS ANGELES - Second ranked UCLA fought off crisp serving and mild rallies to sweep Loyola Marymount, 15-9, 15-12, 15-12 in the MPSF Mountain Division opener for both teams Thursday night at Gersten Pavilion.

The Bruins, 4-0 overall and 1-0 in league play, survived four aces each by outside hitter Corin Bemus and opposite Tim Farmer of LMU to record their 54th consecutive victory over the Lions in the cross-town series.

In Game 1, the Bruins held a 13-3 lead before LMU scored six straight points to narrow the margin to 13-9. Key kills by outside hitter Fred Robins iced the game for UCLA.

In Game 2, head coach Al Scates was forced to substitute freshman outside hitter Mark Williams for senior Ben Moselle after the Bruins lost a five-point lead and were down 12-11.

"Williams came in and really turned things around," Scates said. "We got some really quick blocks because he really penetrated (at the net)."

Williams finished the match with nine kills in 10 attempts for a .900 hitting percentage.

In Game 3, the Lions led 9-7 before a timeout and a substitution by Scates erased LMU's momentum.

"It's good to win ugly once in awhile but a win is a win," said Scates. "It's not the best we've played but we hung in there and we won it in three. We'll get better."

The Bruins host their alumni Saturday night in a 7 p.m. match in Pauley Pavilion. League play resumes Thurs., Jan. 23 at UC Santa Barbara.
