UCLA Tames Tigers in Three Sets

Sixth-ranked UCLA swept past 15th-ranked UOP on Friday night in Pauley Pavilion in an MPSF men's volleyball match. Scores of the contest were 25-19, 25-19, 25-20. UCLA improved its overall record to 12-9 on the season and 8-7 in conference action.
UCLA set the tone for the match early after scoring the first four points in the contest. The Tigers closed to 13-11, but the Bruins answered back and moved out to a 16-12 lead after a kill by Spencer Rowe. A couple of service aces by Gonzalo Quiroga put UCLA in front 19-14. Clayton Paullin added a kill and a block for a 23-18 advantage. A Quiroga kill and a hitting error gave UCLA set one by a score of 25-19.
The Bruins stormed out to a big lead in set two and enjoyed a 14-5 cushion after an ace by Dane Worley. UOP never got closer than five points for the balance of the set and UCLA took a 25-19 win on a kill by Quiroga.
Set three was hotly contested from the start as the Bruins owned leads of 6-5, 11-10 and 15-13. A Robart Page kill handed UCLA a 17-14 lead. UOP sliced the difference to 19-18 before Quiroga added points 20 and 21 for the Bruins. A couple of kills by Worley down the stretch helped the Bruins come away with the set, 25-20.
Quiroga paced the Bruin attack with 13 kills and four service aces. Worley added 11 kills, three aces, six digs and two block assists. Paullin stood strong at the net and finished with five block assists. Rowe totaled five kills and three blocks. Setter Steve O'Dell had 34 assists, an ace, a block solo and three block assists.
UCLA will be back in action on Sunday at Noon against fourth-ranked Stanford in a match to be played in the John Wooden Center. The Pac-12 Networks will televise the contest live.
