LOS ANGELES--Second ranked UCLA defeated visiting Rutgers in 75 minutes on St. Patrick's Day at Pauley Pavilion, 15-3, 15-2, 15-6. The victory raised the Bruins' overall record to 19-2. The Scarlet Raiders fell to 13-6.
Senior Tom Stillwell led the Bruins with 10 kills, while hitting .563, and added five blocks, including four in Game 3. Sophomores Adam Naeve and Evan Thatcher added eight kills apiece and Naeve also aced the Scarlet Radiers four times, accounting for UCLA's only aces in the match.
"We were sluggish, but we won," said UCLA coach Al Scates. "We got hot at the net in Game 3 and managed to score some points off our block."
After hitting close to .500 the first two games, the Bruins' attack faltered in Game 3 to .217. But UCLA found its block, recording 8.5 total blocks in Game 3, including solos by Stillwell and setter Brandon Taliaferro.
On Friday, Mar. 20 the Bruins meet fourth ranked Hawaii in Honolulu in a key league match at 9 p.m. PST. The two teams will square off again on Sat., Mar. 21 in a non-league contest at the same time.
