Men's Volleyball Shocked by Hawaii

March 21, 1998

On a historic night at the Stan Sheriff Center, the University of Hawai'i Rainbow men's volleyball team stunned #2 UCLA, 15-6, 15-12, 15-13 in front of 5,812 (7,391 tickets issued). The straight set win was the first time UH swept the Bruins 3-0 in 39 meetings between the schools. The win improves UH's record to 16-5 overall.

In the first game, UH forged ahead 6-5 on a UCLA error after falling behind 2-5. Middle blocker Dejan Miladinovic served up an ace to give Hawai'i a 9-5 lead. The Bruins committed two more errors to give the Rainbows a 11-5 advantage, that would eventually give Hawai'i the advantage to win the game. Setter Mason Kuo ended the game on a dump to take the one game lead.

In the second game, both teams exchanged points until a 7-7 tie. UCLA took the next two points, stuffing a Naveh Milo kill attempt and a Fred Robins kill, to jump ahead 9-7. The 'Bows responded and went on a four point run on two UCLA errors, and two UH blocks. UCLA rallied to 14-12, but the 'Bows put it away on a Miladinovic solo block.

With a 2-0 advantage, UH soared to a 7-1 lead with scrappy defensive play and timely hitting. The Bruins came storming back to 7-6 but UH kept their composure to jump back out to a six point lead at 12-6 on a pair of Miladinovic blocks. UH took a 14-9 lead and served six times for match point. UCLA closed to 14-13 but on UH's sixth try for the match, Robins hit wide to give the 'Bows the win.

Middle blocker Andre Breuer led Hawai'i with 22 kills while hitting .439. Miladinovic finished the night with 17 kills, 16 digs and eight blocks. Milo added 13 kills and 13 digs.

Leading the way for UCLA, which dropped to 20-3, was quick hitter Adam Naeve with 19 kills but was limited to just two blocks. Mark Williams had 12 kills while Tom Stillwell added 11.

UH hosts Stanford, next Friday and Saturday in a crucial meeting between the top two teams in the Pacific Division. UCLA does not play until April 3 when they travel to Cal State Northridge.
