Jan. 12, 1998
The second-ranked UCLA men's volleyball team, winners of the 4th Outrigger Hotels Invitational, begins league play this week prior to hosting the annual Alumni match over the weekend.
The Bruins, 3-0 overall, swept Ball State (15-2, 15-4, 15-8), Penn State (15-3, 15-5, 15-8) and host Hawaii (15-11, 15-6, 15-10) to win their second Outrigger title in four appearances. Named to the All-Tournament team were senior Tom Stillwell and junior Fred Robins. Sophomore Adam Naeve was selected the MVP.
This week the Bruins, five-time defending MPSF Mountain Division champions, open league play at Loyola-Marymount Thursday, Jan. 15 at 7 p.m. The Bruins boast a 53-match winning streak against the Lions. Thursday's match will be the Lions' season opener.
On Saturday, Jan. 17, the Bruins host their Alumni in a 7 p.m. match at Pauley Pavilion. Featured former Bruins expected to play are three-time All-American Paul Nihipali and 1996 co-player of the year Stein Metzger.
Naeve led the Bruins with 12 and 17 kills, respectively, against Ball State and Penn State as the Bruins swept both matches in less than 90 minutes.
Sophomore Evan Thatcher led the Bruins with 15 kills in the championship against Hawaii. He also added a team high nine digs, two aces and two total blocks.
"I was very pleased with our ballhandling [at the Outrigger]," said head coach Al Scates. "We dug the ball very well, our hitting was quite strong and our serving was on target. We'll work on our blocking this week, and we should be in good form for our league opener."
