Top-seeded Stein Metzger and Mike Lambert and fifth-seeded Mark Williams and Nick Lucena advanced Friday with winner's bracket victories in the Manhattan Beach Open.

Several other former UCLA players were competing in the $280,000 double-elimination tournament, considered the Wimbledon of professional beach volleyball.

Metzger-Lambert, who won their fourth tournament last week at Chicago, defeated Connor Hastings and Andy Northness, 21-9, 21-10 in the first round. Hastings, a UCLA student, spent one year on the UCLA team, but did not earn a letter.

Williams, a 2004 Olympian, and Lucena, defeated Braidy Halverson and Dane Jensen, 21-19, 21-29 in 39 minutes.
