No. 2 UCLA Opens Season with 16-5 Win Over Pomona-Pitzer

The No. 2 UCLA men's water polo team defeated 21st-ranked Pomona-Pitzer, 16-5, in its season-opening match on Saturday morning at Spieker Aquatics Center in the first game of the two-day UCLA Invitational.
UCLA (1-0) received a game-high two goals from freshmen Danny McClintick and Joey Fuentes, as well as sophomore David Culpan and junior Chris Wendt. Bret Lathrope, Paul Reynolds, Christopher Meinhold, Chris Robertson, Chris Fahlsing, Mario Cardenas, Brendan Zwaneveld and Daniel Lenhart all netted one goal for the Bruins.
UCLA led 8-0 after the first period and scored the game's first nine goals, before Pomona-Pitzer (0-1), got in the scoring column with a power play goal by Jarrod Gaut with 4:55 left in the second period. Sophomore Stephen White started in goal for the Bruins and registered five saves in the opening period.
The Bruins led 11-1 at halftime and built their lead to 13-1 on a 6-on-5 opportunity with a goal from Fuentes.
After scoring 11 goals on the Sagehens' starting goalkeeper Austin Strong in the first half, Pomona-Pitzer made a change in the cage and Tyler Hill came in to stabilize the scoring outburst. He made six saves in the final two periods, which the Bruins held a 5-4 scoring advantage in.
White ended the game with eight saves for UCLA as Hill picked up the six stops for Pomona-Pitzer. Hill registered two stops in goal for the Sagehens in the first half.
