No. 2 UCLA Crushes No. 17 Santa Clara, 17-3

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- The No. 2 UCLA men's water polo team defeated No. 17 Santa Clara, 17-3, on Saturday morning in the first round of the SoCal Tournament at UC Santa Barbara. The Bruins were led by junior Lucas Reynolds, who single-handedly outscored the Broncos with four goals.
With the win, the Bruins improved to 13-1 on the season while Santa Clara dropped to 7-6.
The Bruins jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the first period and extended it to 12-0 by halftime. The Bruins played to a 4-2 scoring advantage in the third period and took a 16-2 lead into the final period. The Broncos earned a 1-1 draw in the final period to end the scoring at 17-3.
The Bruins also received two goals each from sophomores Paul Reynolds and Daniel Lenhart and seniors Griffin White and Bret Lathrope. Five other Bruins scored single goals against the Broncos. Freshman Joey Fuentes, sophomores David Culpan and Christopher Meinhold, junior Aimone Barabino and senior Josh Samuels all got into the scoring column for UCLA.
Senior Matt Rapacz pitched a shutout for the Bruins in goal in the first half while making four saves. Sophomore Stephen White played the second half in the cage for the Bruins and also picked up four stops. In goal for Santa Clara, John Nash collected seven saves while Matt Pritchett had six.
