No. 2 UCLA Rallies But Falls At No. 6 UC Santa Barbara, 11-10
Sept. 30, 2012
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- The No. 2 UCLA men's water polo team was upset by No. 6 UC Santa Barbara, 11-10, on Sunday afternoon in the semifinals of the SoCal Tournament at UC Santa Barbara. The Bruins were led by junior Chris Wendt and senior Josh Samuels with two goals apiece.
With the loss, the Bruins drop to 14-2 on the season while UC Santa Barbara improved to 12-2. Both of UCLA's losses on the year have been by one goal with the Bruins facing large early deficits.
The win by the Gauchos snapped a 35-game winning streak for the Bruins over UCSB that spanned 20 years. UCSB's last victory over UCLA came at the 49er Invitational on Oct. 25, 1992, when UCLA dropped a 12-8 decision to UCSB.
The Gauchos jumped out to a 3-1 lead after the first period and pushed it to 8-4 by halftime. UCLA dominated the third period, winning it 5-1 to tie it at 9-9 heading into the fourth period. But UCSB won the final period 2-1 to end the scoring at 11-10.
Sophomore Derek Shoemaker led all scorers with four goals and made the eventual game-winning goal. It was a nice homecoming for Shoemaker as the game was played at Dos Pueblos High School, where he spent his prep career.
Senior Matt Rapacz played the entire game in goal for UCLA, registering five saves. Senior Myles Christian registered 10 saves for the Gauchos.
The Bruins return to the pool this afternoon in the third-place game of the SoCal Tournament against No. 5 UC Irvine, which lost to No. 1 USC, 10-5, in the other semifinal. The game will be played at Dos Pueblos High School in Goleta, Calif.
