No. 4 UCLA Men's Water Polo Earns 12-5 Win at No. 6 UC Irvine

Chay Lapin ties career high with 13 saves in goal

Oct. 5, 2007

IRVINE, Calif. - The No. 4 UCLA men's water polo team defeated No. 6 UC Irvine, 12-5, before an overflow crowd at Anteater Pool on Friday evening in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) game. The visiting Bruins outscored UC Irvine, 7-1, in the second quarter to take control of the match.

Senior Justin Johnson scored a team-best three goals and sophomore Chay Lapin tallied 13 saves (tying his career high) in the cage to help the Bruins (11-2, 1-1) earn their first MPSF win of the season. Colin Mello led UC Irvine (6-4, 1-1) with three goals.

The Anteaters gained a 3-1 advantage after one quarter on a pair of goals by Mello and one from Brandon Johnson.

UCLA scored six consecutive goals to open the second quarter, including two by Johnson. Mello scored his third goal on an extra-man advantage with 1:00 remaining before halftime to end UC Irvine's drought. Bruin senior Marco Santos answered with seven seconds to play in the half, handing UCLA an 8-4 cushion after two frames.

The Bruins built a 12-4 lead midway through the fourth quarter on goals from Santos, sophomore Kevin Kuga, Johnson and sophomore Tyler Jemmett.

Lapin previously tallied 13 saves against Stanford in the 2006 SoCal Tournament (Oct. 14). UC Irvine's Matt Garcia made nine stops in the cage.

With the victory, UCLA improves its record against UC Irvine to 2-0 - the Bruins defeated the Anteaters, 12-11, in sudden-victory overtime at UCLA on Saturday, Sept. 22, in a non-conference contest.

The Bruins return to action against Brown on Saturday, Oct. 6, at the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center. Game time is 1 p.m. Following the water polo game, UCLA's football team plays Notre Dame at the Rose Bowl at 5 p.m.
