No. 2 UCLA Beats No. 7 Long Beach State, 13-8

LOS ANGELES -- The No. 2 UCLA men's water polo team defeated No. 7 Long Beach State 13-8 on Saturday afternoon at Spieker Aquatics Center. The Bruins improved to 21-2 overall and 4-0 in MPSF play while the Waves dropped to 19-6 overall and 1-3 in league action.
The Bruins jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead on full strength goals by senior Griffin White (6:45) and back-to-back goals by junior Chris Wendt (5:53 and 5:15). Milos Vrzic got the 49ers on the board with a power play goal at the 4:42 mark to make it 3-1. But the Bruins answered with two consecutive goals, the first by junior Aimone Barabino on a 6-on-5 opportunity (1:51) and the second by Samuels to make it 5-1 with 1:14 left in the first. Nolan McConnell scored another power play goal for The Beach with five seconds left to end the first period scoring at 5-2.
The Bruins dominated the second period, pitching a 3-0 shutout. Senior Bret Lathrope scored to make it 6-2 (6:34) and then Barabino got his second goal of the game with 2:10 to go. Sophomore Daniel Lenhart gave the Bruins an 8-2 halftime lead with a goal at the 1:23 mark.
Samuels opened the scoring in the third period to put UCLA up 9-2 with 5:51 to go. The 49ers' Dan Matulis ended the 4-0 scoring run for the Bruins to make it 9-3 with 4:43 left. Then after White scored his second of the day (2:42) to put UCLA up 10-3, LBSU scored twice in the final minute to end the third period with UCLA leading 10-5.
Both teams battled to a 3-3 tie in the fourth quarter. Samuels completed his hat trick on an exclusion goal with 6:10 remaining to make it 11-5. But Vrzic then completed his hat trick on a power play goal (4:46) to pull the 49ers to with five again. Sophomore Paul Reynolds then scored his first of the day to make it 12-6 with 4:09 left. Freshman Danny McClintick would also score his first of the day with a power play goal to extend the lead back to seven (13-6) at the 3:02 mark. Like they did in the third period, the 49ers scored two goals in the final minute to make the final margin 13-8.
The 49ers converted on 1-of-2 penalty shots with Rapacz making a great save at the 1:02 mark of the first period. Long Beach State was also 3-for-9 on power plays while the Bruins were slightly more efficient, converting 3-for-8.
Rapacz played the entire game, picking up 10 saves. Balint Meszaros was credited with seven stops for Long Beach State. The Bruins won all four sprints (the first two by Paul Reynolds and the last two by Samuels).
