UCLA's Jacob Murphy Named to U.S. Roster at World University Games

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. - Rising junior Jacob Murphy of the UCLA men's water polo team has been selected as one of 13 student-athletes to compete for Team USA at the 2009 World University Games, slated to take place July 1-12 in Belgrade, Serbia.
Murphy, a talented utility player from Corona del Mar, Calif., has scored 30 goals in 41 matches for UCLA in his first two seasons on the men's water polo team. A sophomore last fall, Murphy collected 21 goals on 53 attempts (39.6 percent rate) in 24 games, making 23 starts.
He led UCLA with 36 earned exclusions and 12 blocks in 2008, recording 13 steals. As a freshman in 2007, Murphy registered nine goals on 19 attempts (47.3 percent rate) in 17 matches.
Team USA's roster for the upcoming World University Games includes 13 student-athletes and two alternates. The roster comprises several of the most talented current and recent men's collegiate water polo players.
The remaining 10 field players include Shea Buckner (USC), Trent Calder (Stanford), Tommy Corcoran (USC), Thomas Hale (USC), JP MacDonnell (Pepperdine), Colin Mello (UC Irvine), Zac Monsees (California), Matt Sagehorn (USC), Michael Sample (California) and Zac White (California). The two goalkeepers are Jimmie Sandman (Stanford) and Andy Stevens (Loyola Marymount).
Cole Bitter (UC Irvine) and John Mann (California) will serve as the team's two alternates. The U.S. team is led by current California men's water polo head coach Kirk Everist.
