BRUINS AT CALIFORNIA AND UC DAVIS THIS WEEK
The second-ranked UCLA men's water polo team (11-1) hosts No. 10 Loyola Marymount (3-3) on Friday night (Sept. 21) at Spieker Aquatics Center. Start time is slated for 7:00 p.m. UCLA is 22-0 all-time against LMU.
EARLIER THIS SEASON AGAINST CALIFORNIA
Sophomore Chris Fahlsing scored the game-winner in the first overtime period for UCLA as the Bruins defeatd California 11-10 to advance to the finals of the NorCal Tournament at Stanford on Sept. 16. Senior Josh Samuels led UCLA with four goals. The Bruins trailed California, 7-5, entering the fourth quarter.
RECAPPING LAST WEEK
The No. 2 UCLA men's water polo team finished in third place in the 2012 SoCal Tournament at UC Santa Barbara on Sept. 29-30. UCLA opened with a 17-3 win over No. 17 Santa Clara and was led by junior Lucas Reynolds, who single-handedly outscored the Broncos with four goals. In the quarterfinals, UCLA posted a 14-7 win over No. 7 Pepperdine. The Bruins were led by senior Griffin White's four goals. In the 11-10 loss at No. 6 UC Santa Barbara, UCLA trailed 8-4 at halftime before mounting a comeback. The win by the Gauchos snapped a 35-game winning streak for the Bruins over UCSB that spanned 20 years. The Bruins were led by juniors Chris Wendt and Lucas Reynolds and senior Josh Samuels with two goals apiece. The Bruins won the third-place game against No. 5 UC Irvine, 14-8. The Bruins were led by sophomore Paul Reynolds with four goals.
SAMUELS HEATING UP
After missing the first two games of the season with an injury, senior utility Josh Samuels has scored at least one goal in each of the last 12 games and has scored multiple goals in 10 of those contests. Samuels led UCLA last weekend with nine goals in the four games of the SoCal Tournament. He currently leads the team and ranks seventh in the MPSF in scoring (36 goals, 2.57 gpg) and leads the team in steals (30, 2.0 spg).
2012 MPSF COACHES POLL
The UCLA men's water polo team was picked to finish second in the 2012 MPSF Coaches Preseason Poll. The Bruins received two first-place votes, and are behind No. 1 USC, which received seven first-place votes. California, Stanford and UC Santa Barbara rounded out the top five.
BRUINS HAVE NO. 1 OFFENSE
UCLA currently leads the MPSF in scoring with 258 goals in 17 games (15.18 gpg). USC is second (14.50 gpg) with UC Santa Barbara in third (13.80 gpg) and California (13.79 gpg) ranking fourth.
WRIGHT ON DECK FOR YEAR FOUR
The Bruins are led by fourth-year head coach Adam Wright, who has compiled a 78-20 (.796) record, including a 17-7 mark in MPSF action. Wright played at UCLA from 1997-2000, helping lead the Bruins to NCAA Championships in 1999 and 2000. He played for the USA National Team in the 2004, 2008 and 2012 Olympics, leading Team USA to a silver medal in 2008 in Beijing. Wright has played for the National Team in every major international tournament since 2001. He has guided the Bruins to two MPSF Tournament titles and runner-up finishes at the NCAA Tournament in his three seasons at the helm. In 2009 and 2011, UCLA won the MPSF Tournament title and advanced to the title match of the NCAA Tournament. Wright was named MPSF Coach of the Year in 2011 after leading UCLA to the MPSF Tournament title and a runner-up finish at the NCAA Tournament.
