BRUINS HOST STANFORD, TRAVEL TO PACIFIC
The No. 2 UCLA men's water polo team (22-2, 4-0 MPSF) hosts third-ranked Stanford (14-4, 4-2) on Friday (Nov. 9) at 6:00 p.m. at Spieker Aquatics Center. Then the Bruins travel to No. 7 Pacific (11-7, 2-2) for a 12:00 p.m. clash on Nov. 11. The Bruins defeated Pacific 9-4 at the NorCal Tournament (at Stanford) on Sept. 15, 2012.
UCLA is 64-79 (.448) all-time against the Stanford Cardinal. The Bruins posted a 7-6 win at Stanford in the last meeting between the two teams on Oct. 15, 2011. UCLA has won the last three over Stanford. The Bruins are 38-3 (.927) all-time against Pacific and had a sudden-victory over the Tigers last year at home, 13-12 (Nov. 4, 2011).
RECAPPING LAST WEEK
The No. 2 UCLA men's water polo team defeated No. 7 Long Beach State 13-8 on Nov. 3 at Spieker Aquatics Center. The Bruins improved to 21-2 overall and 4-0 in MPSF play while the Waves dropped to 19-6 overall and 1-3 in league action. Senior goalkeeper Matt Rapacz had 10 saves while senior Josh Samuels, led all scorers with three goals.
The No. 2 UCLA men's water polo team hammered No. 21 Concordia, 21-7 in the second game of the day on Nov. 3 at Spieker Aquatics Center. The Bruins improved to 22-2 overall while the Eagles dropped to 11-8. Thirteen different Bruins scored in the game, led by a career-high from redshirt freshman Maxwell Vilim-Brozyna's three goals. He had one career score coming into the game with the Eagles. Sophomore David Culpan also had three scores against Concordia.
SAMUELS AT NO. 5 IN CAREER SCORING
Senior utility Josh Samuels has scored 52 goals this season and has already surpassed the 49 he tallied a year ago. He moved into fifth last week on the UCLA career charts with 160 goals in 101 games. Samuels needs only three more to move into fourth all-time (Fernando Carsalade, 1985-88, 162). He has now scored at least one goal in 20 of the 22 games he has played and has recorded multiple scores in 17 of those 22 contests.
2012 MPSF COACHES POLL
The UCLA men's water polo team was picked to finish second in the 2012 MPSF Coaches Preseason Poll. The Bruins received two first-place votes, and are behind No. 1 USC, which received seven first-place votes. California, Stanford and UC Santa Barbara rounded out the top five.
BRUINS HAVE NO. 1 OFFENSE
UCLA currently leads the MPSF in scoring with 352 goals in 24 games (14.67 gpg). USC is second (14.52 gpg) with California (13.16 gpg) ranking third. UCLA also ranks second in the MPSF in defense, allowing 6.21 goals per game. USC tops the defensive charts, allowing just 5.29 goals per contest.
WRIGHT ON DECK FOR YEAR FOUR
The Bruins are led by fourth-year head coach Adam Wright, who has compiled a 85-20 (.810) record, including a 21-7 (.750) mark in MPSF action. Wright played at UCLA from 1997-2000, helping lead the Bruins to NCAA Championships in 1999 and 2000. He played for the USA National Team in the 2004, 2008 and 2012 Olympics, leading Team USA to a silver medal in 2008 in Beijing. Wright has played for the National Team in every major international tournament since 2001. He has guided the Bruins to two MPSF Tournament titles and runner-up finishes at the NCAA Tournament in his three seasons at the helm. In 2009 and 2011, UCLA won the MPSF Tournament title and advanced to the title match of the NCAA Tournament. Wright was named MPSF Coach of the Year in 2011 after leading UCLA to the MPSF Tournament title and a runner-up finish at the NCAA Tournament.
