No. 2 UCLA Rallies But Falls To No. 1 USC, 7-6
The second-ranked UCLA men's water polo team fell behind early, 5-0, to No. 1 USC, but rallied to score six of the last eight goals in the championship game of the NorCal Tournament on Sunday. The Trojans hung on for a 7-6 decision.

BRUINS AT USC, HOST UC IRVINE
No. 2 UCLA (24-2, 6-0 MPSF) is at No. 1 USC (23-0, 7-0) on Nov. 17 with the MPSF Tournament's No. 1 seed up for grabs. The game will be televised live on Pac-12 Networks and starts at 4:30 p.m. The Bruins end the regular season on Nov. 18 on "Senior Day" at home vs. No. 9 UC Irvine (14-11, 0-7). The game will be televised on Pac-12 LA, and starts at 10:30 a.m.
UCLA is 73-73-1 (.500) all-time against the USC Trojans. The Bruins dropped a 7-6 decision to USC in the only meeting this year (in the finals of the NorCal Tournament at Stanford on Sept. 16). The Bruins are 69-59-1 (.539) all-time against UC Irvine and defeated the Anteaters, 14-8, in the third-place game of the SoCal Tournament (Sept. 30) at UCSB.
RECAPPING LAST WEEK
The No. 2 UCLA men's water polo team defeated No. 3 Stanford, 9-5, on Friday night at Spieker Aquatics Center. The Bruins improved to 23-2 overall and 5-0 in MPSF play while the Cardinal dropped to 14-5 overall and 2-3 in league action. Senior goalkeeper Matt Rapacz had nine saves while senior Josh Samuels, junior Chris Wendt and sophomore Paul Reynolds each scored two goals to lead the Bruins. Nick Hoversten led Stanford with two goals.
The No. 2 UCLA men's water polo team posted a 13-10 win at No. 7 Pacific on Nov. 11 at Chris Kjeldsen Aquatics Complex. The Bruins improved to 24-2 overall and 6-0 in MPSF play while the Tigers dropped to 12-7 overall and 3-3 in league action. Senior Josh Samuels led the Bruins with three goals. Four other Bruins netted two goals apiece. Senior goalkeeper Matt Rapacz blocked 12 shots in four quarters of work.
SAMUELS AT NO. 4 IN CAREER SCORING
Senior utility Josh Samuels has scored 57 goals this season and has already surpassed the 49 he tallied a year ago. He moved into fourth last week on the UCLA career charts with 165 goals in 103 games. Samuels needs 13 more to move into third all-time (Sean Kern, 1997-00, 177). He has now scored at least one goal in 22 of the 24 games he has played and has recorded multiple scores in 19 of those 24 contests.
2012 MPSF COACHES POLL
The UCLA men's water polo team was picked to finish second in the 2012 MPSF Coaches Preseason Poll. The Bruins received two first-place votes, and are behind No. 1 USC, which received seven first-place votes. California, Stanford and UC Santa Barbara rounded out the top five.
BRUINS HAVE NO. 2 OFFENSE AND DEFENSE
UCLA currently ranks second in the MPSF in both scoring (374 goals in 26 games, 14.38 gpg) and goals allowed (164 goals in 26 games, 6.31 gpg). USC is first in both categories, scoring 340 goals in 23 games (14.78 gpg) and giving up 120 goals in 23 games (5.22 gpg).
WRIGHT ON DECK FOR YEAR FOUR
The Bruins are led by fourth-year head coach Adam Wright, who has compiled a 87-20 (.813) record, including a 23-7 (.767) mark in MPSF action. Wright played at UCLA from 1997-2000, helping lead the Bruins to NCAA Championships in 1999 and 2000. He played for the USA National Team in the 2004, 2008 and 2012 Olympics, leading Team USA to a silver medal in 2008 in Beijing. Wright has played for the National Team in every major international tournament since 2001. He has guided the Bruins to two MPSF Tournament titles and runner-up finishes at the NCAA Tournament in his three seasons at the helm. In 2009 and 2011, UCLA won the MPSF Tournament title and advanced to the title match of the NCAA Tournament. Wright was named MPSF Coach of the Year in 2011 after leading UCLA to the MPSF Tournament title and a runner-up finish at the NCAA Tournament.
