UCLA Uses 61 Point Second Half to Ease Past ASU

WESTWOOD, Calif. -UCLA, 6-5, 1-1, evened its record in Pac-10 Conference play with a 95-73 win over Arizona State today in Pauley Pavilion before 1,064 fans.
Guard Melanie Pearson, one of four Bruins in double figures, keyed a Bruin 61-point second half attack by scoring 14 of her 18 points in the game. UCLA led just 50-44 at the 13:30 mark of the second half, after leading by two, 34-32, at intermission, when it outscored ASU 16-5 over the next 4:05 minutes to take a 66-49 advantage with 9:25 on the clock.
Pearson, a sophomore guard from Irvine, Calif. Woodbridge high school, scored nine points in the Bruin run, including a pair of three-point shots. Pearson, who leads the Pac-10 in three-point shooting percentage, hit all three of her attempts today and has now connected on 22 of her last 34 shots (.647) this season from long range. UCLA went on to lead by as many as 28 points, 90-62, at the 3:23 mark of the game, before settling for the final 95-73 margin.
All-America candidate Maylana Martin paced UCLA with a game-high 22 points. Sophomore center Janae Hubbard had 15 points and a game-best 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Senior forward Stephanie Freeman topped Arizona State, now 4-7, 0-2, with 17 points and six rebounds.
