Team Effort Brings Bruins Back to Defeat Cougars, 76-70

Women's Basketball improves PAC-10 record to 7-2

PULLMAN, Wash.- UCLA put four players in double-figures to rally back from a 19-point second half deficit and defeat Washington State 76-70 in Pacific-10 women's basketball action at Friel Court Saturday.

The Bruins (12-6 overall, 7-2 in PAC-10 play), are off to their best conference start in school history. UCLA was led by Maylana Martin's game-high 24 points including 11-of-14 shooting and 10 rebounds. Marie Philman and Erica Gomez each knocked down 12 second-half points to finish with 14 apiece, while Aisha Veasley grabbed seven rebounds to go with her 11-point effort.

The first half began as an inside battle between Yvonne Kunke and Martin. Kunze scored seven of WSU's first 13 points, while Martin led UCLA with eight of the first 10 Bruin points. But then the rest of the Courgar team cam alive. Jennifer Kerns scored five straight points to give WSU an 18-14 advantage with 11:19 remaining in the opening half.

WSU outscored UCLA 12-7 in the opening minutes of the second half to take a 52-35 lead with 14:55 to play. The Bruins responded with 10 unanswered points to bring them within seven, 52-45, midway through the second half.

The Bruins regained the lead for the first time since early in the first half when Philman scored her second straight bucket to put UCLA ahead 69-67 with 39 seconds remaining. From that point WSU's comeback hopes were thrawrted by three Cougar turnovers and 10 UCLA trips to the free throw line.
