LOS ANGELES -- The UCLA women's basketball team took over sole possession of second place in the Pac-10 Conference with a rousing 82-54 defeat of Oregon today at Pauley Pavilion. The 28 point win was the largest margin of victory by the Bruins in the series history.
The Bruins (13-6, 8-2 in Pac-10 play) shot 59.3% from the field, 66.7% in the second half when the Bruins widened a narrow five point (37-32) halftime lead into as much as a 31-point lead (79-48) at the 1:12 mark. Oregon shot just 32% in the second half (8-25) and 35.8% in the game.
Maylana Martin (Perris/Perris HS) led the Bruins with 14 points and six rebounds. Freshman LaCresha Flannigan (San Bernardino/San Bernardino HS) contributed 12 points off the bench. Also in double figures for the Bruins were Tawana Grimes (Norwalk/Lynwood HS) with 13 and Janae Hubbard with 10 points in 11 minutes of play. Eleven players in all scored for the Bruins.
For Oregon (11-7, 7-3), Natalia Hughes led with 14 points. Nicole Strange contributed off the bench with 12 points.
The Bruins, which defeated Oregon 80-75 in Eugene Jan. 10, recorded their first sweep of the Ducks since 1992 and will look for its first sweep of both Oregon schools in six years when they face Oregon State Sunday, Feb. 8 at 2 pm in Pauley Pavilion. Oregon will face USC Sunday.
