Feb. 27, 1998

LOS ANGELES - The UCLA women's basketball team scored another Pac-10 victory, defeating Washington State by a score of 80-74 in front of a crowd of 1,934 at Pauley Pavilion. Bruin sophomore center Janae Hubbard scored a career-high 26 points (11-13 shooting, 84.6%) and 18 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. Hubbard scored 17 points and 12 rebounds during UCLA's second-half push.

Poor shooting (.387) and 14 turnovers by the Bruins led to their 32-31 defecit at the half, but UCLA turned things around after the intermission, shooting 51.4% in the second half. During that second half, the lead see-sawed between the two teams early on. With the Cougars up 60-59, UCLA went on a back- breaking 9-0 run to turn the lead in its favor, 68-60. Melanie Pearson keyed the run with five of those nine points. She finished with 19 on the night.

Also scoring in double-figures for UCLA were Maylana Martin with 13 and Marie Philman with 10. Tawana Grimes had a season-high eight assists.

For Washington State, Yvonne Kunze led the way with 25 points and 13 rebounds. Joanna Smith was the Cougars' only other double-figure scorer. She finished with 12 points.
