UCLA Opens 01-02 Season With 83-56 Exhibition Win Against Slovakia

Los Angeles, Calif. - The UCLA women's basketball team opened its 2001-02 campaign with an 83-56 exhibition victory over Delta Kosice of Slovakia.

Seniors Michelle Greco and Malika Leatham each scored over 20 points to lead both teams. Greco totaled 23 with six rebounds, two assists, four steals and zero turnovers, while Leatham recorded a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds in just 24 minutes of play.

UCLA jumped out to an early 11-2 lead behind six quick points from Greco. The Bruins extended the lead to as much as 15 points until Delta Kosice rallied late in the half to cut the lead to four, 39-35, at halftime.

The second half was all UCLA, as the Bruins went on an 11-0 run to turn a close 42-38 game at the 17:33 mark to a 53-38 lead at 14:42. The Slovakians cut the lead to 59-50 at the 8:36 mark but could only watch as UCLA went on a 21-0 scoring run to put the game away. The Bruins held Delta Kosice scoreless for six minutes to go up 80-50 with 2:30 left on the clock.

The Bruins outshot Delta Kosice, 42.4%-29.7% and held a 51-36 advantage on the boards. The Bruins also forced 28 turnovers.

Guard Gennifer Arranaga nearly recorded a double-double, scoring eight points and pulling down 10 rebounds in 19 minutes. Point guard Natalie Nakase also scored eight points.

The Bruins next host the L.A. All-Stars in an exhibition game on Sunday, Nov. 11 at Pauley Pavilion at 2:00 pm.
