Box Score

San Luis Obispo, Calif. - The UCLA women's basketball team earned a 57-48 win over Cal Poly in a non-conference contest played Wednesday night at Mott Gym in San Luis Obispo.

UCLA, now 3-1 on the year, opened the second half with a 12-4 burst to increase a nine-point halftime lead to 40-23 with 15:30 on the clock. A couple of jump shots by junior guard Erica Tukiainen sandwiched around an inside shot by senior post Chinyere Ibekwe ignited the run. Cal Poly, which fell to 2-2 on the season, answered back with a 7-0 run to whittle the lead down to nine points at 52-43 with 5:10 on the clock. The Bruins were held scoreless for almost four minutes during the stretch. Sophomore guard Darxia Morris hit a pair of free throws at the 3:21 mark to break the ice and put the Bruins up 54-43. The Bruins held the double digit lead until the final seconds of the contest.

The Bruins utilized a full court press to break open a close game and went on to take a 28-19 lead into the locker at halftime. UCLA led 7-6 at the 15:36 mark before extending their defense. The Bruins then hit six of their next nine shots from the field, most on layups after steals, to take a 21-12 lead with 7:18 on the clock. Sophomore forward Nina Earl and freshman guard Atonye Nyingifa each had two baskets during the Bruin run.

Earl, who finished with 12, was the only Bruin in double digits points. Senior guard Tierra Henderson led UCLA with a career-best nine rebounds.

UCLA will return home to Pauley Pavilion on Sunday to play host to Cal State Northridge in a game that tips off at 2 p.m.
