Notre Dame Wins Double Overtime Thriller Over UCLA
Nov. 30, 1997
Notre Dame pulled out a thrilling 93-91 double overtime win over UCLA when
Marie Philman's three-point shot from the top of the circle bounced off the rim
at the final buzzer. UCLA had forced overtime when sophomore guard Melanie
Pearson hit an off-balance three-point shot which just beat the buzzer at the
end of regulation and tied the score at 67. Notre Dame's Danielle Green missed
an open shot in the lane at the end of the first overtime which would have given
the Irish an 81-79 lead with just seconds to play and instead the teams went to
a second extra period knotted at 79 each.
Notre Dame freshman forward Kelly Siemon's two free throws in the
second overtime period made the score 93-90 with 37 seconds to play. Grimes was
then fouled on the rebound of a UCLA missed shot and hit the second of two free
throw chances to narrow the margin to 93-91 with 21 seconds to go. The Bruins
then forced an Irish turnover with five seconds to play and inbounded the ball
under the Notre Dame basket. Philman took a pass into the frontcourt and fired
from straight away at the top of the three-point circle. Her shot bounced off
the front of the rim and the Irish had the win.
Pearson led UCLA (now 0-3) with a career-high 30 points, 28 of which
came after halftime. Philman added a career-best 17 points and a game-high nine
rebounds. Junior guard Sheila McMillen led Notre Dame (3-1) with 29 points,
including six of seven three-point shots. Siemon added 20 more points for the
Irish, all coming after the half, and converted all 12 of her free throw
attempts.
