Bruin Women Win First Of Season, 87-69 Over USD

Behind a double-double (season-high 32 points and 12 rebounds) from
sophomore forward Maylana Martin (Perris/Perris HS), the UCLA women's basketball
team won its first game of the season, 87-69 over the University of San Diego.
Martin's 18 first-half points helped UCLA take a 44-29 advantage into the
half, and the Bruins extended the lead in the second half with sophomore reserve
center Janae Hubbard leading the charge. Hubbard had 12 points in the second
period and finished with a career-high tying 16. Also tying a career-high was
senior center Carla Houser, who scored eight. Sixes were wild for sophomore
point guard Erica Gomez, who pitched in with six points, six assists and six
rebounds. Melanie Pearson (Irvine/Woodbridge HS) had a career-best four blocks.
For San Diego (1-4), guard Susie Erpelding led with 19 points, 15 in the
first half. Also in double-figure scoring were forward Jennifer Tuiolosega (12
points) and guard LaKia Alexander (11 points).
UCLA (1-3) will next face Fresno State at Fresno Sunday, Dec. 14 at 2:00 pm.
