Womens Golf 1997 Outlook

Team Outlook: The Bruins welcome back three players from last year's
fivesome that finished fifth at the NCAA Championships, plus two other
letterwinners. Complementing the veterans are four talented recruits.
Junior Sophie Sandolo is the Bruins' top returning player. She ranked
10th nationally last season after leading the Bruins with a 75.1 stroke
average and begins the 1997-98 campaign ranked 6th.
Senior Amandine Vincent averaged 76.4 a year ago with five top five
finishes and begins the season ranked eighth in the preseason MasterCard
poll.
Sophomore Alexandra Gasser, the third returnee from last year's NCAA
fivesome, averaged 79.1 as a freshman and begins the season among the
nationally ranked honorable mention group.
Freshmen Laura Moffat from West Kilbride, Scotland, and Julie Oh of
Torrance also received honorable mention in the preseason rankings. They
are part of a UCLA recruiting class that includes 1997 Los Angeles City
Junior champion Leilani Bagby of Santa Monica and 1997 U.S Women's
Amateur participant Alicia Um.
Rolex Fall Preview: The third annual Rolex Fall Preview will be held at
the 1998 NCAA Champioships site, the University Ridge Golf Course at the
University of Wisconsin. The course measures 6,033 yards and plays to a
par of 72. Among the 18-team field are six of the nation's top 10 ranked
teams, including defending NCAA champion Arizona State, No. 2 Arizona
and the fourth ranked Bruins. The Bruins hold the 54 hole scoring record
of 879 and the single day record of 28, both set at LaQuinta Golf Course
in 1995. Arizona's Marisa Baena is the defending champion and the
Wildcats also are the defending team champions. Results can be obtained
