Bruins Win the Regional Challenge

Palos Verdes, Calif. - The top-ranked UCLA women's golf team won its first event of 2012 and fourth title of the season, capturing the Regional Challenge at Palos Verdes Golf Club on Wednesday.
Cold, wet and windy weather sent scores upward, but the Bruins hung tough and survived the storm with a 12-shot victory over USC and 13 other schools. UCLA posted a 12-over par score of 300 in the final round and finished with a 54-hole total of 870 (+18). USC recorded one of the lowest scores of the day (294, +10), but could not overcome the 18-shot UCLA lead, and finished at 882 (+30). Pepperdine was third at 887 (+35), followed by Arizona State at 891 (+39) and fifth-place Duke at 897 (+45).
The victory represents UCLA's third in the 17-year history of the tournament and their first since 2008. For Coach Carrie Forsyth, the title is her 44th at UCLA.
Freshman Erynne Lee led the charge for the Bruins in the final round, posting a score of 74 (+3) and finishing third overall at 216 (+3). Junior Tiffany Lua took fourth place at 217 (+4), following a final round of 75 (+4). Tied for eighth was junior Lee Lopez at 220 (+7). She posted a 76 (+5) on Wednesday. Sophomore Ani Gulugian tied for 10th at 221 (+8) following her round of 78 (+7). Senior Brianna Do posted the team's best score of the day -- a three-over par 74 -- and tied for 39th at 229 (+16).
Playing as an individual, freshman Kyle Roig tied for 26th at 226 (+13).
Duke's Lindy Duncan won medalist honors with a three-round total of 210 (-3) following a final round 70 (-1).
