Kono leads Bruins to Victory in Match Play Prelims

UCLA freshman torches the course for 12-under par total.

The top-ranked UCLA women's golf team won the 36-hole preliminary competition at the 6th Annual Collegiate Match Play Championship at the Ginn Resort in Orlando, Fla.

The Bruins posted a two-round score of 567 (-9), including a round of seven-under par 281 on Sunday morning. Virginia was the runnerup at 576 (E), followed by third place Alabama at 579 (+3). Second-ranked USC and Duke were tied for fourth at 582 (+6).

The first-place Bruins will meet No. 8 Michigan State on Monday in the first round of match play. The Spartans finished with a score of 590 (+14).

Individually, freshman Stephanie Kono torched the par 72, 6,245-yard course for a pair of 66s. In her morning round she made six birdies and 12 pars, and in the afternoon she made seven birdies, 11 pars and a bogey.

Senior Tiffany Joh tied for 10th place at 144 (E) after posting rounds of 71-73. Tied for 24th place at 147 (+3) were senior Maiya Tanaka (72-75) and sophomore Maria Jose Uribe (75-72). Junior Sydnee Michaels tied for 30th at 148 (+4) after carding scores of 72-76.
