Bruin Wave Invitational Begins Monday
March 3, 2013
UCLA and Pepperdine will team up as hosts this week for the fourth annual Bruin Wave Invitational at El Caballero Country Club in Tarzana, CA, Mar. 4-5.
Seven of the nation's top 50 teams will be competing for the team title, including top-ranked USC, 12th-ranked Arizona and No. 16 UCLA. Also competing are No. 20 Oklahoma State, and No. 33 Denver.
In their last two starts, UCLA and USC have battled against each other at the top of the leader board. At the Regional Challenge in February, the Bruins beat the Trojans by nine shots. USC avenged that result last week at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate, beating UCLA in a playoff.
Ranked 34th, Pepperdine is the defending champion. The Waves won last year's title at El Caballero by two shots over the Bruins and by eight shots over Oklahoma State, which has returned this year with the nation's No. 1 ranked player in senior Kelsey Vines.
Other ranked individual competitors include, No. 7 Annie Park and No. 8 Kyung Kim of USC, 10th-ranked Erynne Lee of UCLA, No. 11 Sophia Popov of USC and Pepperdine's Grace Na, ranked 14th. The field also includes two former champions in seniors Lee Lopez of UCLA (ranked 43rd) and Christine Wong of San Diego State (ranked 195th).
In its second year as host venue, El Caballero CC will play to a par of 72 over 6,131 yards. Thirty-six holes will be played on Mon., Mar. 4 and the final 18 holes will be played on Tue., Mar. 5. Monday's round begins at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start, and Tuesday's round begins at 8 a.m. with tee times beginning on the first and 10th tees. Admission is free.
