Golfers Cruise to 14-Shot Victory in Japan

Glory Yang wins first collegiate title.

The UCLA women's golf team won its first event of the season and produced its first individual champion at the Topy Cup in Japan.

The Bruins defeated Tulsa by 14 shots with a 54-hole total of 864 (E). In the final round, UCLA posted a score of four-under par 284, throwing out a score of 73 (+1). Tulsa was the runner-up with a score of 878 (+14), followed by Hosei University at 903 (+39). Doshisha University was fourth at 904 (+40) and Ritsumeikan University was fifth at 939 (+75).

UCLA sophomore Glory Yang won her first collegiate tournament title, but played extra holes to bring home the trophy. She defeated Akari Yamamoto of Doshisha with a birdie at the 18th. Yang fired a final round 70 (-2) to finish with a three-round total of 212 (-4).

Freshman Stephanie Kono also posted a final round score of 70 (-2) and tied for third place at 214 (-2). Junior Sydney Michaels and sophomore Maria Jose Uribe tied for sixth place at 220 (+4). In the final round, Michaels carded an even par score of 72 and Uribe posted a 73 (+1). Senior Ryann O'Toole tied for eighth place, improving with a score of 72 (E) for a 54-hole score of 221 (+5).

The Bruins' next tournament will be Sept. 26-28 at the Mason Rudolph Championshiip in Franklin, TN.
