UCLA Signs Golf Standout Maria Jose Uribe

Colombian earned AJGA All-America honors last month.

Nov. 14, 2006

Maria Jose Uribe (Bucaramanga, Colombia), one of junior golf's top players, has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend UCLA, the athletic department announced Tuesday.

Uribe, 16, was ranked 13th nationally this week among U.S. junior golfers by GolfWeek and was named an American Junior Golf Assn. All-American last month.

"Maria Jose Uribe is one of the top junior golfers in the class of 2007," said Head Coach Carrie Forsyth. "She's played well in a variety of USGA events this summer and she'll make an immediate impact on our team next season."

Uribe tied for fifth at the Rolex Girls Junior Championship in June. At the U.S. Girls Junior Championship in July, she placed second in stroke play with scores of 70-70--140 (-4). In match play, she advanced to the round of 16. At the 2006 U.S. Women's Amateur Publinks Championship, she placed 11th in stroke play with scores of 69-75--144 (E). In match play, she advanced to the quarterfinals before falling 3 and 2 to UCLA's Tiffany Joh, the eventual champion.

The future Bruin golfer also played in the 2006 U.S. Women's Open, where she tied for 81st with scores of 76-76-152 (+10).
