Salt Lake City, UT - The top-ranked UCLA gymnastics team snapped the longest home-court winning streak in the history of NCAA sports, defeating Utah in front of over 10,000 in a dual meet at the Huntsman Center. Utah's streak dated 23 years and 170 meets.
The Bruins began the meet a little shaky on the uneven bars, where they had to count a fall and scored a 48.775. Jamie Dantzscher led the Bruins with a 9.95, receiving a 10.0 from one judge. Utah, meanwhile, totaled a 49.1 on vault, led by a pair of 9.9s from Melissa Vituj and Annabeth Eberle.
UCLA overtook Utah on vault, with Kristin Parker leading off with a stuck pike front half good for a 9.925. Jeanette Antolin and Dantzscher each contributed 9.975s, a career-best for Antolin, and Kate Richardson added a 9.925 as the Bruins scored a 49.65, the second-highest team total in school history.
The Bruins maintained the lead after the third rotation, pulling in a 49.35 on the floor exercise despite three-tenths of a point in out of bounds deductions. Dantzscher scored her second 9.975 of the night, and Richardson contributed a 9.925. Utah, meanwhile, scored a 49.15 on beam to give the Utes a 147.3 total after three events, .475 behind the Bruins heading into the final rotation.
Antolin started the Bruins off on beam with a brilliant leadoff performance good for a career-high 9.9, and her teammates followed suit with solid performance after solid performance. Dantzscher and Willis each scored 9.875s, and Malia Jones recorded a 9.85. Richardson clinched the Bruin victory with a 9.875, and Yvonne Tousek put the exclamation point on the win with a 9.925 to close the meet.
Dantzscher won the all-around with a total of 39.775.
"I'm thrilled to death," Waller said. "It's great how things worked out. When we found out about Valorie not making the trip, I totally saw how the team turned inwards, taking on all the roles and doing all the different things that Valorie does for the team. The team was so dependent on each other."
UCLA will next compete on Friday, Jan. 17 at Cal State Fullerton at 7:00 pm.
