UCLA Women's Gymnastics Defeats Arizona State, UC Santa Barbara and Denver
Second ranked Bruins win home opener

LOS ANGELES - The second-ranked UCLA women's gymnastics team defeated Arizona State, UC Santa Barbara and Denver in the Bruins' home opener in front of a near-capacity crowd of 1,967. UCLA scored 193.15 to ASU's 191.175. Denver and Santa Barbara followed in third and fourth respectively. UCLA and ASU were meeting for the first time since UCLA knocked the Sun Devils out of the lead going into the final rotation at the 1997 NCAA Championships, which the Bruins won for the first time in school history (ASU placed second).
Arizona State held a .125 lead after one event, but the Bruins took a .225 lead after the second rotation and continued to expand the lead. The Bruins swept the individual events, with freshman Mohini Bhardwaj winning the vault (season-high 9.8) and floor exercise (9.825). Sophomore Heidi Moneymaker took first place honors on bars with a 9.9. Juniors Kiralee Hayashi and Luisa Portocarrero tied for first on the balance beam with identical scores of 9.825. In the all-around, Hayashi for the second consecutive meet was the Bruins' highest finisher, placing first with a 38.575. Bhardwaj (season-best 38.325) and Moneymaker (38.225) followed.
The Bruins will travel to Tucson, Arizona to face Arizona Friday, January 23 before returning home Saturday, Feb. 7 for the UCLA Invitational against Stanford, Michigan and Cornell.
