Feb. 27, 1998

SEATTLE, WA - The 13th-ranked Washington women's gymnastics team turned in its top performance of the season to upset fifth-ranked UCLA, the defending NCAA champion,195.900 to 194.425 in Hec Edmundson Pavilion.

Washington set a school record on floor exercise (49.425) and recorded its highest balance beam mark of the season (48.500) to pull off the upset. The victory marked the first time Washington has defeated the Bruins in 25 meetings.

Husky senior Klara Kudilkova led Washington to the win by posting a 39.325 in the all-around competition. UCLA's Lena Degteva tied Kudilkova for all-around honors. Kudilkova won the floor exercise with a career high score of 9.950 and also captured top honors on vault (9.925). The Huskies completed a sweep of event winners when Jamie Stauffer won the uneven bars (9.900) and Tiffany Simpson turned in the top score on the balance beam (9.925).

UCLA chose to compete just five-deep on vault and floor, hoping to rest some of its athletes. As a result, all five scores had to count. The Bruins' lowest score of the night came on normally their best event, floor (48.325). But some of UCLA's highlights also came on floor, as Stella Umeh scored a 9.925, and Heidi Moneymaker competed for the first time ever a whip to immediate double- back for her second tumbling pass. Moneymaker scored a 9.875 on her routine.

Bruin junior Kiralee Hayashi had an outstanding meet, hitting either career or season highs on all three events in which she competed. She scored a career-high 9.9 on vault (third place) and tied her career high on beam with a 9.9 (second place). She also hit a season-high on bars, a 9.85 (tied for second place).

Freshman sensation Mohini Bhardwaj returned to the lineup after suffering an injured ankle Feb. 5. Bhardwaj scored a 9.85 on her only event, the uneven bars, and tied for second place.

But although the Bruins got Bhardwaj back, they lost senior Carmen Tausend to what is feared to be an ACL tear. Tausend, who returned to gymnastics in October after retiring last April, suffered the injury on her bars dismount. She will be lost for the remainder of her final season.
