UCLA Gymnasts Defeat Michigan, 197.25-196.775
March 7, 2003
Ann Arbor, Mich. - Behind the strength of five all-around competitors, the top-ranked UCLA gymnastics team defeated 10h-ranked Michigan, 197.25-196.775 at Michigan's Crisler Arena. The Bruins swept the Top 3 all-around standings, with junior Jamie Dantzscher and freshman Kate Richardson tying for first with scores of 39.525. Junior Jeanette Antolin was close behind in third with a 39.5.
The Bruins won every event, scoring 49.375 on bars, 49.175 on vault and 49.35s on floor and beam. UCLA held just a .425 advantage heading into the final event, the balance beam, but a 9.85 from Yvonne Tousek, a 9.875 from Antolin, a 9.9 from Onnie Willis and an event-winning 9.95 from Richardson helped the Bruins seal the victory.
UCLA had winners on three events - Antolin on vault (9.925), Richardson on beam (9.95) and Dantzscher on floor (9.95).
The victory did not come without a price, however, as junior Alyssa Beckerman dislocated her knee on a tumbling series on the floor exercise. She is expected to sit out four to six weeks with the injury.
UCLA will return to action on Sunday, March. 16 in the annual UCLA Invitational at Pauley Pavilion. The meet will begin at 2:00 pm, and UCLA will honor its Fab Five Senior class of Malia Jones, Kristin Parker, Carly Raab, Doni Thompson and Onnie Willis in pre-meet cermonies.
