Zamarripa Named UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of Week
Feb. 5, 2013
Senior Vanessa Zamarripa (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township HS) of the UCLA gymnastics team was selected as the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for Jan. 29-Feb. 3.
Zamarripa had another dominating performance in the Bruins' 196.925-196.200 win at 11th-ranked Stanford, scoring her seventh career perfect 10 on vault and winning the all-around with a season-high-tying 39.675. She also won the floor exercise with a 9.925 and placed second on uneven bars (9.85) and balance beam (9.9). Zamarripa's perfect 10 was the first 10 in the nation this season on vault and only the second 10 on any apparatus thus far. She has scored at least one perfect 10 in each of her four years - all but one has come on the road. With her two event victories this weekend, Zamarripa has now placed first on nine of 14 routines this season, and she also has won the all-around in each of the three meets in which she has competed all-around. She leads UCLA in season average on all four events and the all-around, averaging 9.9 or better on three events and over 39.6 in the all-around.
This is Zamarripa's third UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor of the season and record-tying ninth of her career.
Also nominated: Alyssia Brewer, W. Basketball; Rachel Fattal, W. Water Polo; Emma Ivory-Ganja, W. Diving; Ting Quah, W. Swimming; Gonzalo Quiroga, M. Volleyball.
