Bruins Sweep Pac-10 Weekly Gymnastics Awards
Feb. 24, 2009
Walnut Creek, CA - UCLA freshman Elyse Hopfner-Hibbs was selected the Pac-10 Gymnast of the Week for the second time this season, and her classmate Vanessa Zamarripa was awarded Pac-10 Special Performance of the Week honors for the third time, as announced by Pac-10 Commissioner Tom Hansen. The accolades mark the second time this season the two have swept the weekly honors.
Hopfner-Hibbs led the Bruins to a 196.125 team total at Nebraska with a meet-winning all-around score of 39.475. The Toronto, ON, native recorded scores of 9.8 or better on all four events, including a career-high 9.95 on vault to tie for second place. She also tied for second on floor (9.875) and tied for third on bars (9.85). Hopfner-Hibbs has hit 21 consecutive routines with scores of 9.775 or better, including 15 marks of 9.85 or better in that streak. She has captured all-around titles in three meets this season. Furthermore, Hopfner-Hibbs ranks first on the UCLA roster with 19 top-three finishes and is second on the team with eight individual victories.
Zamarripa received her second consecutive Special Performance of the Week honor and third this season after scoring her third perfect 10 on vault in seven meets. The feat gives Zamarripa the national lead in perfect scores attained in 2009. She remains the only gymnast in the country to score a 10.0 on vault this year, as well as the only gymnast to score multiple 10.0s on the same event. She currently ranks first in the nation with a Regional Qualifying Score of 9.94 and has a team-high five vault wins on the year. Zamarripa's performance at Nebraska helped UCLA record a national-best 49.575 on the event, a score that ranks as the sixth-best team total in school history.
The Gymnast of the Week nod is Hopfner-Hibbs's second this season and UCLA's 25th all-time. Zamarripa has claimed three of UCLA's four Performance of the Week nods this year.
