Between The Bars

Wow, we can't believe we are seniors already! In our three years, we have seen so many changes on our team - from winning a national championship in 2004 to experiencing the highs and lows of "rebuilding." Each year has been so different; this year is no exception.
We often talk about "heart" and "passion" on our team. Peckett and I can't believe how much of both of these qualities our team has! We had our second mini intra-squad today. Every single Bruin had so much fun competing and showing off their skills. It's been a great year so far because the energy in our gym hasn't dipped even for one day since we reported in September. We are a TEAM in every sense of the word.
In other news ... wait until you see our freshmen! Ashley, Brittani and Anna are not only beautiful gymnasts but have great spirits that are a great addition to our team. Most years, it takes freshmen some time to settle into their new team, but all three dove right in and made a smooth transition -- they are 100% Bruins!
Yesterday was one of our most anticipated days of the season for us. Each year we have the honor of visiting Coach Wooden at his home. It is an amazing experience. He enthusiastically answers the questions we pose for him and always shares words of wisdom, reminding us that the character we build and the lessons we learn in gymnastics are important in all aspects of our lives. When he was asked why he enjoys our meets, he said that he is amazed at the camaraderie that our team has for each other. He went on to explain that he would have thought gymnastics would have been a more individual sport, and the fact that he saw a true TEAM on the floor, cheering and supporting each other, really made a lasting impression on him. He is always quick to compliment us as well for the academic success that has become part of our team's tradition. It was especially fun this year because Coach had one of his former players join us as well. Mike Warren, who was a two-time NCAA Champion and All- American, shared great stories of what it was like to play for Coach Wooden. Having Coach welcome us into his home and being able to spend time with him like this is something we all feel is priceless. Thank you, Coach!
For all of our Bruins fans - This year we are no longer a rebuilding team. We are "built." We are having as much fun as ever and are so excited for our senior year! We can't wait to see you at Meet the Bruins on Sunday, December 3rd! Go Bruins!
