UCLA Gymnastics Team Voted Preseason No. 1

For the second consecutive year, the UCLA Gymnastics team has been voted preseason No. 1 in the coaches poll. The Bruins, who finished a close second at the 2011 NCAA Championships, received 932 points and eight of 40 first-place votes, edging out defending champion Alabama, who had 17 first-place votes and 926 points total.
UCLA head coach Valorie Kondos Field returns two NCAA individual champions in 2011 balance beam champion Samantha Peszek and 2010 vault champion Vanessa Zamarripa. Additionally, the Bruins return All-Americans Olivia Courtney, Monique De La Torre, Tauny Frattone, Aisha Gerber, Elyse Hopfner-Hibbs and Sydney Sawa and welcome a talented class of freshmen, led by World silver medalist Mattie Larson and U.S. National Team member Cassie Whitcomb.
The Bruins will face nine of the Top 25 teams in the polls this season, including five in the Top 10 in No. 4 Oklahoma, No. 5 Utah, No. 7 Oregon State, No. 8 Stanford and No. 9 Georgia. Also on tap are meets against No. 14 Boise State, No. 15 Illinois, No. 16 Washington and No. 19 Arizona.
The Bruins open the season on Sunday, Jan. 8 against No. 5 Utah at the John Wooden Center. Season and individual meet tickets are on sale now at the UCLA Central Ticket Office (310-UCLA-WIN, tickets.ucla.edu).
